Many people wish for their own American Dream… Bilingual, Graduate Realtor Institute, Accredited Buyer's Representative, & e-PRO Certified REALTOR®, Raúl Rubio Guevara knows what it takes to get there because he worked hard to achieve it! And he lives it every day! It was during his early college years that Raúl learned that books are more powerful than fists. That was quite a discovery for a young man who had dominated street fights and amateur boxing. Raúl grew up in a large, extremely poor family of migrant workers. He picked fruits and vegetables from the Rio Grande to Lake Michigan beginning at the age of four. He lived in houses without the basic necessities that most of us take for granted. According to Raúl, however, this was one of the happiest times of his life!
At the age of 15, he left Texas and eventually ended up in Hutchinson, Kansas in 1969, desperately wanting to be somebody. Here he reunited with his father, who was now a probation officer and bailiff. Raúl got into numerous street fights because he thought he could fight racism and discrimination with his fists. He still did not get the respect he craved until he started fighting in the ring. At the age of 17, he became the undefeated Golden Gloves welterweight champion of Kansas and Oklahoma. Two years later, he moved up to middleweight and captured that title also. Four influential people helped make Raúl the person he is today. A longtime sociology professor made a big impression on him. “He increased my self-esteem and confidence in the academic arena,” Raúl says.
An administrator at Hutchinson Community College taught Raúl to respect himself. According to Raúl, he used to tell him that respect is the single most powerful ingredient in nourishing relationships and creating a just society.
A former Kansas Senator taught Raúl how political activism could bring about change. He challenged Raúl to address community problems, to take stands on important issues and to make possible what appeared to be impossible. “I learned that democracy is not a spectator sport,” Raúl said. Raúl went on to work internships with Kansas 2nd District Congress woman's office and a national lobby organization as well as working a Fellowship in the Kansas Governor's office. A local business owner and longtime community activist taught Raúl to be proud of his rich heritage, language & traditions. He made Raúl aware of the significant contributions Hispanics have made to our community, the state of Kansas and the nation. These people convinced Raúl that he could make a difference in the lives of others. Raúl has dedicated himself to achieving excellence, being a team player and being a strong advocate of his family’s, friends’ and clients’ best interests. He is a strong family man who spends most of his free time, along with his wife of 24 years, Maria De Jesus, nurturing his children, Monica Felicia and Raúl Francisco, and helping them to grow and develop.
Raúl’s personality is best stated by a former President of Washburn University who, in a letter of recommendation to the Washburn School of Law, said “Raúl is an outstanding young man. He is articulate, competent, conscientious and honest. He has demonstrated mature leadership ability and has the wide experience of organizing and directing programs. He remains an active aggressive athlete yet very much a gentleman in a social situation. His fine sense of humor adds to his command of the social graces.”
